My love-hate relationship with time…

Hello again!

A year ago I decided to take a little time off from writing and then somehow a year went by. I feel like I don’t know where the year has gone, but I think we can all agree that this has been a year that seemed to go on forever.

And, wow! In just 12 months, the world has changed: Covid-19. The US Presidency. Kobe Bryant dies tragically. And, Black Lives Matter.

In the next 12 months, I hope that the world can find a way to become kinder, and to be truly respectful of each person regardless of our differences. I hope that Covid teaches us to treasure the gift of being close to another person, without fear. And I hope that even if a vaccine saves the world, we will not forget to slow down.

This being my first post of 2021, I wanted to write about time. Recently, I came across an article in the British Psychological Societies Research Digest where they asked some of the world’s leading psychologists to share, in 150 words, one nagging thing they still don’t understand about themselves. I decided to add my thoughts to this impressive piece of work.

Why is it that I long for unstructured time to ‘relax’ but when I have it, I become bored, unproductive and feel like I have no purpose?

One nagging thing I still don’t understand about myself

I have a love-hate relationship with time. There are many different kinds of time, but today I will mention only three: Work-time, Weekend-time, and Vacation-time. I get along pretty well with my work-time, and my weekend-time and I are (mostly) on speaking terms. My difficulty is with my vacation-time. For months, I look forward to having time where I can do anything I want and just relax… but when I finally get some “time off,” I cannot seem to enjoy it? UNLESS I have a plan, a schedule, or a goal for this time. Why is it that I long for unstructured time to ‘relax’ but when I have it, I become bored, unproductive and feel like I have no purpose? And then it’s Monday again. Back to work. Back to plan my next time off.

What about you? If you could speak your mind about something you still don’t understand about yourself, what would you say? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Until next time,

Keep it Real!
