Getting High on Recovery

For someone in your life, you are indispensable. If you doubt it, just pick up the phone.

One telephone pole. Is one telephone pole really neccessary?

Who cares about one lousy telephone pole. I can just whip out my cell phone and instantly make connections across the world.

Who needs landlines to connect the dots?

Apparently a lot of people care. Sixteen in fact.

I was supposed to be working, at least that’s what I told my boss I was doing. But really I was watching the men on the ground. At one point, they had four trucks involved in taking down the old pole and getting the new pole set up and connected.

All that effort for ONE pole.

Getting anything done is NEVER a one person job. I cannot name them all, but I guarantee that it took a lot more than 16 people to raise me, and get me set up and connected in life.

Some of the people in my life were unknown, others were in the trenches, some did the high work and some just directed the traffic.

But each one was important.

Making progress takes a lot of effort and energy. It’s only when we are disconnected that we appreciate the importance of things like telephone poles.

When connection is down, life grinds to a halt.

Connection is essential to families and friendships. It is the thing that makes our work work: without connection, our leadership, our sales, our counseling or human service work, or our writing is flat.

You may be in the trenches, you may just direct traffic, or you might be the one who does the high work and gets all of the thanks. No matter what part you play, what you do and who you are is important.

If you forget how important you are, just look out your window. You matter far more than the telephone poles that dot the horizon.

For someone in your life, you are one of the 16.
