Are you in need of a second chance today?
___
If you are, you are in good company. Today I am in need of a precious second chance. In fact, every day for me is a second chance at living. It is true that all that we have is today, so why not make today a new beginning?
Today is not a day to pull yourself together. You don’t have to make yourself good enough for grace or well enough to get up again. The beauty of the second chance is that it begins today, right where you are at.

I draw inspiration today from none other than St. Jude. It is said that Jude is the Saint of lost causes. I like to think of Jude as the Saint of the second chance, the Saint of the underdog… for those days when you feel that your cause is lost before it ever started.
Maybe today is a day when you need a little extra: grace, understanding, and help. Jude is the Saint for those of us who think we are at the end of things, the end of ourselves. If you believe your cause may be lost or that you are done and are out of chances, then think no further than St. Jude.
On those days when the darkness is all around you
You may not believe, or you may be unsure of what you believe, or your belief may be strong and certain. Wherever you are at, I know it is difficult to keep hope alive in a world where darkness is no further away than the next newscast, internet troll or ranting political leader.
But what about when the darkness comes from inside of you?
Some days the darkness is not just from outside of ourselves. It may come from our own behavior and how we think about our world and ourselves.
- Our attempts to change but then we fall back again.
- Addiction and the ever present pull back to the easiest way.
- Self doubt and the familiar path of hating ourselves.
- Depression and how it creates a numb distance from reality.
- Our judgment and our negativity.
- Be your messy self
- Be imperfect and coming alive
- Be in process but working at it
- Be present, because sometimes that is all that we can do
- Be willing to ask for help simply by reaching our your hand
Regardless of where you are at, today is a second chance. Take it. Take the grace, the understanding and the help that is yours. You don’t have to be good enough to earn a second chance. Get up, be honest with yourself and remove the clutter: all that you need to do is take one step.
