Travis Mills has a message for you: Know that it’s always gonna get better.
____
What do you call a man with no arms and no legs? Retired Sgt. Travis Mills.Disclaimer: You are about to laugh and then you will catch yourself, but that’s okay. That is the point.
This is how Mills says it went down…
You know what happened, actually I saw the bomb.
And the guy was like, Don’t step on that, I bet it will kill you.
I was like, I bet it doesn’t.
And I said, Five bucks!
He said, Make it ten!
I stepped on it and guess what I came out? Ten bucks ahead.
That’s not what really happened, but Staff Sargeant Travis Mills is not very serious about anything.
“I woke up to my 25th birthday only to find out that I had no arms and no legs anymore.”
What would you do in that situation? Travis told his wife to leave him because he couldn’t see a future for himself. He thought he had nothing to offer.
But it was his family that changed him: he realized that his six month old daughter needed her father and no one else could replace him.
He determined to be a husband, a father again, and to get better.
Travis and his wife have started a foundation they call Recalibrated Warriors. Basically they are supporting veterans who are Bionic Men and Bionic Women.
Travis has a message: I want people in my situation to know…
- It’s okay the way you look
- It’s okay to struggle
- Don’t be embarrassed about it
- It’s okay to fall down and get back up
- Just get out there and keep going at it
If you can relate to Travis’s story, his loss, his pain, his joy and his recovery, then you are one of his warriors. Life may take your limbs, your peace of mind, your past, your sobriety, your sanity, or your family but you can recover.

Recalibrated Warriors come in all shapes and sizes and are found in all walks of life. If you can relate to Travis’s story, his loss, his pain, his joy and his recovery, then you are one of his warriors. Life may take your limbs, your peace of mind, your past, your sobriety, your sanity, or your family but you can recover.
Travis leaves you and I with a question: Instead of asking, what could get worse? Just know it’s always gonna get better.
