Part of being an addict is thinking there’s an easy way out of things. Ready to Test
Earlier this year, I posted about how I am working towards a certification as a Clinical Addiction Counsellor. The only remaining part of my work is to successfully complete a 3.5 hour exam.
I finally have a date for my exam, April 21, 2017. Honestly, the test has me feeling anxious. When I am under the pressure of an exam, my mind confuses things and I overthink things.
To best prepare for the test, I have studied nearly every day over the past 90 days, taken four practice exams and written 5 essays to get the information to stick. The process has been invigorating, interesting and challenging.
There is no easy way out of addiction or mental health recovery. When you have a goal to change your life, it takes work. And often you have to push back against your anxiety, the voices in your head that tell you that you can’t do it or that you won’t succeed.

Taking on a big challenge means that you need to work hard even when you would rather stay in bed. There is no easy way out of addiction or mental health recovery. When you have a goal to change your life, it takes work. And often you have to push back against your anxiety, the voices in your head that tell you that you can’t do it or that you won’t succeed.
Over the past three months, I have learned a great deal about addiction and mental health. Completing the process will allow me to improve my clinical skill, my writing and my approach to therapy.
I will continue to deliver daily posts on this blog. Over the next month, I will be featuring many posts that I have written over the last two years of writing along with continuing to offer fresh content.
I appreciate that you are reading, sharing and commenting on my writing. It means a great deal that sharing my story, my writing has an impact on you. It has been a life-long dream to write. One of my passions is to create something new and share it with you. Over time I hope to write a book, which right now feels like a daunting process.
I invite you to read more about what I have learned about addiction from my preparation for this exam:
